A Family Legacy of Art in Downtown Wilmington

Welcome to The Golden Gallery, a cozy and distinctive art destination nestled in the heart of Wilmington, North Carolina. Located in the historic Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington, the gallery has been a beloved part of the local art scene since 1977. Every piece you encounter here is created by members of the Golden family, offering visitors a rare and deeply personal artistic experience rooted entirely in the Cape Fear Region.

The gallery was founded by Mary Ellen Golden, a celebrated watercolor artist whose work has come to define the visual memory of southeastern North Carolina for generations of collectors. Today, the gallery is owned and operated by her son, John W. Golden, who continues the family tradition through photography and illustration inspired by Wilmington and its surrounding coastal communities.

Mary Ellen Golden: Capturing the Cape Fear Coast

Mary Ellen Golden is widely recognized for her luminous watercolor paintings of Wilmington landmarks, riverfront scenes, and cherished locations along the Cape Fear Coast. Her work has found homes throughout the Wilmington area and far beyond, with collectors across the country and around the world drawn to her ability to capture the spirit and beauty of southeastern North Carolina.

Growing up in Rose Hill, North Carolina, Mary Ellen demonstrated artistic talent at an early age, beginning formal art instruction at just twelve years old. After studying art and later English in college, she spent several years teaching high school English while raising her family. Her artistic journey was reignited in Charleston, South Carolina, where she studied watercolor under noted artist Virginia Fouche Bolton.

When Mary Ellen and her family relocated to Wilmington in 1977, she discovered an empty storefront in the Cotton Exchange and opened The Golden Gallery. Alongside her watercolor paintings, the space became a lively creative hub, often filled with the music of her husband, John C. Golden, whose guitar and original songs were inspired by local folklore and history. Though Mary Ellen has since retired from painting, her artwork remains an essential and celebrated part of the gallery’s collection through carefully produced reproductions.

John W. Golden Photography - Rooted in Wilmington

John W. Golden is a Wilmington, North Carolina–based photographer whose work focuses on the landscapes, textures, wildlife, and everyday moments that define the Cape Fear Region. Growing up in downtown Wilmington, John spent countless afternoons in the gallery and surrounding streets, absorbing the sights, sounds, and textures that continue to shape his creative work today.

Encouraged by his mother from an early age, John began selling artwork alongside Mary Ellen before the age of eleven. He later earned a degree in Graphic Design with a minor in Photography, building a foundation that blends technical skill with a strong sense of place. After working in the design industry on projects for companies such as Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, John returned to Wilmington in 1999 and has been creating new work for the gallery ever since. He assumed full operation of The Golden Gallery when Mary Ellen retired in 2019.

Wilmington Photography with an Artistic Approach

John W. Golden’s photography emphasizes mood, texture, and atmosphere—capturing how Wilmington and the surrounding coast feel, not just how they look. His work is inspired by Wilmington’s historic downtown, the Cape Fear River, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and other coastal environments throughout southeastern North Carolina.

A signature body of work is the Rovinato series, a mixed-media photographic collection that layers original photographs of local landmarks with textures sourced from John’s surroundings. These pieces create a moody, painterly aesthetic that blends realism and abstraction while remaining deeply connected to Wilmington’s visual history.

Illustration, Wildlife, and Coastal Series

In addition to photography, John W. Golden is known for his distinctive digital illustrations. His work includes:

  • Saltwater and freshwater fish illustration series

  • Dog and cat breed illustrations

  • Wildlife-inspired studies

  • Wilmington and Cape Fear–based photographic artwork

These works reflect John’s early adoption of digital tools and his background in graphic design, resulting in artwork that feels contemporary while remaining firmly rooted in the local landscape.
